“When It Is Our Turn to Be Adults”
This work is part of the project “When It Is Our Turn to Be Adults”, which engages with the collective memory of a generation, where physical objects serve as triggers for profound personal transformation. The project seeks to materialise memory and to translate it into a language through which adulthood can be articulated not as a narrative of loss, but as a process of becoming.
The installation consists of 16 wooden objects that mimic the form of mobile phones. They were crafted from timber blocks sent from the artist’s native village in Ukraine by their grandfather. The work is grounded in a childhood memory in which making wooden phones served as a symbolic rehearsal of adult social roles, as imagined through a child’s lens.
The piece marks the shift from play to reflection — a meditation on how childhood notions of adulthood begin to diverge from its lived experience.
